I wanted to create a zoom based on one of my static pictures http://www.flickr.com/photos/panzerbo...

This had been created from 4 layers of the same mandelbrot coloured with different palettes and merged using the GIMP graphics program. Avisynth does have the layering capabilities of GIMP so I've written my own Avisynth plugin. Not as difficult as it might sound, it was mostly a matter of copying one the example plugins and substituting the pixel arithmetic which can be found in the GIMP source. (GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, so its open-source). After that effort the result is... well underwhelming, parts look gorgeous other parts awful. That's the danger of using a colouring regime optimised for only a particular zoom level.
