Many of us have been inside a lighthouse, but have you ever had the opportunity to look inside a First Order Fresnel Lens? Join me in a slideshow presentation of the Meares Lighthouse on Cape Meares, Oregon. It was built in 1890 to serve as a light station to the Tillamook Bay. The lens was created in Paris in 1888 and had been shipped around the tip of South America to Oregon. Marvel at the outstanding system that allows light to be directed 21 nautical miles out to sea. This 38 foot tall lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.
This sequence was shot in July 2005 before the devastating 2010 vandalism that caused over half million dollars damage.
