In our documentary, INSPIRED: The Movie, we explore the many different ways individuals are able to control their eating habits. Among them, is a 12-step program called Overeaters Anonymous. In this clip a member talks about his experience finding OA and how his perspectives have changed since.

  • This is the typical story I hear in OA, it's only focused on what you ate, what you weighed, etc. Other 12 programs focus on recovery, not on the substance. What do people in OA base their recovery on, anyway? I've talked to less than a handful of overeaters who really get that recovery is more than their food plan and I meet very few people in OA whose recoveries I would model mine on. That's why I go to other 12 step programs even though my drug of choice is food. It's not helpful to me.

  • Thanks for your comments! I am glad you have found your support through other 12-step programs. I believe there are many levels of "recovery" -- the uniqueness of OA is that the substance in question is something we must face every single day...because we must all eat. While we are all in search of the single, most perfect answer to our problems -- perhaps there is more than one answer, and we musn't choose only the best...but try them all until we find the one that fits.

  • What is OA's answer then? What is their solution. I don't see one and I would really like to know.

  • Perhaps we should continue this conversation via email, but... The answer is not the same for everyone. So if you are still wanting a single answer, there is not exactly one. This is a process of being accountable for our own actions, whether we can hold ourselves accountable, or need others or other ideas to keep our actions in check. Sometimes it's just having someone else to talk to. Sometimes it's a phone call...a sponsor, a goal. I think it's more organic than you say.

  • I must say I'm curious as to how many meetings you've been to and how much OA literature you've read. My experience with OA has been the complete opposite of yours. Of course food plans are part of the recovery process but I havent met one member who hinges there recovery on that. I certainly don't. Please understand I am no way disrespecting your comments, I'm just having a hard time imagining coming to that conclusion. We focus on the very same steps of recovery as other ANON groups.
