This unusual twin-rotor helicopter with counter-rotating blades was being used to transport large loads to the construction crews in the remote locations. Use of aircraft like this prevents additional road-cutting in the National forest. This tower construction is part of the controversial 500kv power transmission line project now taking place in popular recreation areas of Bouquet Canyon (Angeles National Forest), California. The project is intended to bring electrical power generated by the Tehachapi wind turbine farm down into the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys, thus tieing the wind farm more firmly into the grid.

  • @dfeers Cool - They're a trip to watch, too! Thanks for stopping by =)

  • They lift 6,000 pounds

  • Could be - I haven't seen that particular episode... This helicopter is a K-Max made by Kaman Industries. It's not as large as the Sikorsky Sky Crane, which is used for really heavy lifts :-)

  • same helo as on national geographic "big fix" show...the hulk? Certainly same type.

  • Very cool and surprisingly quite aircraft. Thanks for watching!

  • That's a Kaman K-Max helicopter.

  • I'm not sure, but I think that was a large generator for power and arc welding... it looked heavy!

  • Hate to have that come down on my toe =)
