Free Roam PSP Game

The game is called: Kenka Bancho Badass Rumble.
Those who have played The Warriors will be instantly familar with this style of gameplay. It's a typical beat-em-up that takes place in a fictional area in Japan.
You are a delinquent school kid on a week-long school trip to Japan. For each day you are given the option to either tag along with the class or to ditch them, make your own way around Japan to take on the other fighters, beat them and to become the leading fighter (Bancho).
The game is split up into approximately 20 locations. They're all relitavely small, with just a couple of streets each but the amount of things you can do in these locations is absolutely phenominal.
You can start fights with people, go to shops to buy food (that act as powerups; fortifying or increasing your health, stamina, etc) or buy weapons (mainly these wooden souvenir katanas), to get a haircut or new hairstyle, to buy new clothes, etc. You can ultimately customise your character to the way you want and it's really good fun.
Fighting other banchos will level up your character and you can assign stats to your preferences, eg: Health, Defense, Attack, Speed, etc.
There are also hidden packages scattered around the city for you to find and these will give you money or any random objects.
The locations are well designed and while some look very similar, overall they do have completely different styles to them. Eg: old temples, urban streets, shopping promenades, etc.
