Looking at three throws 82m, 87 and 89m. The longer and lower his float after his penultimate step the further the throw was. According to his coach.

  • does a jump up give you any more? This is a big thing I struggle with understand. For baseball pitching, Snowboard boardercross (though that is more variable)...You are essentially trying to glide on the ground right? You do not want to go up. You want over...Is this right?

  • Actually Thorkildsen's coach said that they focus a lot on gliding long, not high. Their goal is to cover as much linear ground as possible with the jump. There are six throws from the competition that were filmed from this angle and the javelin goes farther the longer he floats and up to 4m less the higher he "hops"

  • What is fascinating is how far left his plant foot points. This helps get his right hip so far forward.

  • I have always noticed that too. According to Andreas his left foot plant is just because he has a bad left ankle from injuries. His coach said there is no technical advantage to his left foot pointing out.

  • i still cant get the meaning of lower float and wide stride that allows you to throw further..

so now i know why my throws are close under 45meters.. btw im not a thrower i just practised for 3-4 moths, any help will be greatly appreciate.

  • There have been some good studies which show a negative correlation with penultimate step height and throw distance.

  • I would disagree turning the plant to 10:30 does open up the hip more effectively from both timing and reaction. It is also a position almost, if not all, 90M+ get into. The most difficult position to get is the forward hip rotation and this action is the most effective in aachieing this position.

  • the last jump in jav is to get your feet to land close to the same time, and get that breaking action with the front foot.

  • Excellent video mate!

awesome for learning how to throw a javelin well

  • excellent video for showing the rotational style of throwing, of course it helps being thork too

  • wow good vid to watch.... ty this hlps
