Actually, his statement didn't imply that. It implied that only people who can hear bass can play bass, not the other way around.

It's not the bass he's playing, it's him who's playing it. Find a bass that works for you. Yamaha basses are good but his are made by hand and customized so they're aren't like the kind at the store. Get one you like that feels good for you. Don't worry at all about looks or color just feel and sound.
