@sonicgardenplaysdead: at the time Steely Dan released this song, the US and USSR between them had about 50,000 nuclear weapons pointed at each other. The lyrics are pretty clearly about the aftermath of a nuclear war. "smoking cobalt cigarettes... " is a riff on the Doomsday Machine meme in which life on Earth is extinguished by cobalt-jacketed hydrogen bombs. and "ain't no marigolds left in the Promised Land, there's a hole in the ground where they used to grow... " is about H-bomb craters.
