remember at this point romano was out of surgery working as chief of the ER. He could not operate and since he is such a jerk he has nobody to lean on. so basically at this point seeing Abby, a nurse (a really good nurse), doing something he couldn't despite his experience was like torture. of course he's still a jerk.

I found Romano odd. Sometimes he was totally civil and professional. Other times he was like a chick with PMS.
