Also, this is about 3 times cheesier. I liked the movie version more for this reason as well.

While I think this scene could have been a substitute for the movie version, it would have made the part where WallE held open the holodetector less heroic. It was the fact that WallE was injured but never surrendered and fought to his death that made WallE a hero in the final battle scene against Auto.
