what does 4.1 gears do? i just bought a 93 z28 & there is a whining noise whenever i let off the gas, the abs light is always on, the speedometers off, ive been getting poor mpg & i feel as though im slipping from 1st-2nd?

anytime you increase the ratio in the drive axle of a vehicle, it accelerates easier and faster. Can also improve mpg if your driving stays the same. Your 93 is an LT1, the 99 in this video is an LS1. From what you describe, it sounds like your an automatic. If so, the whining is normal, depending on how loud it is. As for the abs light, have that checked out. The speedometer could be due to a bad sensor or it was tuned previously. As for the slipping, it could be the sign of a bad trans.

@rmikek1973 are gears hard to change can you explain how to do it?
laveth 1 year ago
@laveth technically, its not hard to do but if you have never done it, I suggest going to a shop. Essentially, you are removing the c-clips, sliding the axles out, removing the limited slip and ring gear, removing the driveshaft, unbolting the pinion gear, and then swapping the ring and pinion gears with new ones, installing a new crush sleeve, setting the pattern correctly, then putting it all back together. A good shop can do it in an hour.

@rmikek1973 at a cost of?
laveth 1 year ago
@laveth when I had them done, it was $175. If you find one that charges more than $200, look for another shop. :) I have heard of guys spending $400 or more and the gears break due to poor setup. I always ran Richmond gear but the GM Motive stuff is a wise investment as well.
