i'd prefer it be based on linux than bsd. linux is 100% open source, and is therefore substantially more flexible than most other options. freeBSD may be that way too; i do not know. but i see why google chose linux.

Linux Ubuntu
or Linux mint ... or one of the 1,000 of Linux distribution...
Or there is always BSD that Mac OS was based on... PC-BSD, freeBSD or the many other flavors of BSD, or Linux...
They can do most of the things Mac can , but for free on an standard PC...
