I heard Frank Howard hit a ball down the left field line that went out of Yankee Stadium and was declared foul. Also heard that a few Yankee players declared the ball was actually fair and claimed it was hit so far that the umpire got the call wrong.
Frank, as shown in this video, is as gracious and considerate a man can be. Over the past 50years in baseball, he's more than made up for a rookie moment. Frank Howard is all class.
In 1958, i met Frank Howard outside of the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles when he was a rookie. I was twelve years old and I asked him for an autograph as he was walking into the stadium. He said, 'I am late' and he didn't sign the autograph but Wally Moon and manager Walt Alston who arrived later, had plenty of time to talk to me and give me their autographs. I have never liked Frank Howard ever since.
