I'm Kevin Edzenga and this is my fall 2009 demo reel. I hope you enjoy. I give some notes in the reel along with the program I used in the upper right corner of projects.
I've been working in the industry a short while now as a VFX Technical Director (since may 2009). I really enjoy making particles and scripting, I feel it's like new age problem solving. I love figuring out how to make a rig so it does what the animators need, or to be able to control particles exactly how they need to be moved. Call me a geek, I don't care, I love this stuff.
The only part of this reel I think needs some more explanation on methodology or how it was made is the fly swarm. This was designed for my thesis at the School of Visual Arts, but the flies find the closest 2 neighbors and create a triangle out of them in math and will fly on the normal of that triangle (90 degrees away from the two others). The effect this causes is similar to Emerging Complexity (or organized movement between insects or animals, like a swarm of birds flying in formation); the insects will never fly into each other and will always be spiraling around a central pivot which I can as well control. This creates an insect swarm feeling.
The music is from OCRemix.org from the Secret of Mana an awesome game on super Nintendo if you've never played it.
