This is Yodai Nakamura doing the net drill on December 28, 2010. This is a pull drill while the hitter avoids casting/swinging around the ball and hitting the net.

  • I've never seen or known of a MLB hitter that doesn't do some sort of drill work. Then again, I don't know everyone and there is probably someone that doesn't. Talk to any professional hitter or coach; they will all tell you the a hitter has to stay inside the ball.

  • Never, ever do this drill. It is the worst drill any hitter can do. It is teaching to not have circular hand path. Why would you do that? The hitter is FORCED to deviate his elbow angles to hit that ball. Once again, why would you do that?

Come on guys, it's just physics. Watch this video. /watch?v=Huda3vQUPN4

Thanks for the comments. I learned this drill from Kevin Long, the hitting coach for the New York Yankees. Coach Long has had a lot of success with the drill and so have I. The drill teaches the hitter to be short, quick, and inside the ball which will enable one to pull the inside pitch. If this drill is good enough for A-Rod, Tex, and Cano, it's good enough for me.

  • All you have to worry about is timing, and repetition. If your kinesthetic sequence is correct(hips, shoulders, elbows, implements), MOST mechanical flaws will take care of themselves. Sure there are feely things to get kids to STOP doing things, but that's only for severe cases, when a kid has poor body awareness. For example, if a kid drops his bat head, have him stick it straight up in the air & when he swings, if he drops it, it'll be easier to feel.

  • Why do drills? If you can control your bat, and have good results with the ball coming off the bat, as in hard hit balls, you have a good swing. Those are things you can't do without a good swing. If you take a round of batting practice, and say, "im going to hit every ball to right field this round", and you do, then your has fixed itself. There are also certain things you can't do without a good swing. That's why your body will figure it out on its own.

  • @coachjoehicks Can you tell me what that means in terms of how you would have to change your mechanics to do that?

Instead of saying, "they say that", or "They told me this", can you tell me why? Why not analyze it. It's physics. To create maximum batspeed, the angle of elbows, & the distance of the elbow must stay constant through contact. I watched a video of this kid swinging from another angle, and he's taking what you are telling him so far, his elbows are bending MORE as he swings.

  • @coachjoehicks Watch the video I linked to. You don't hit "inside the ball". Deviating the angles of your elbows is making the hitter have to break inertia multiple times throughout the swing. I don't know the extent of Kevin Long's use of this drill, if he really uses it at all. I don't believe in drills. A good swing is a natural movement. If you take enough batting practice, the hitter will figure it out on his own.
