I appreciate the comments everyone, but I'm neither Kozue nor Alice :)
1: I found Kozue Aikawa has a youtube channel (xxxayu3), so I borrowed her original video of the Sweet Magic dance which was of a higher quality than what I had previously found. (hope she doesn't mind!)
2: I re-rendered the clip in the native resolution of the source video. It's a bit more high-def but MMD's support of only Microsoft Video 1 background AVIs means the rendering still looks pretty poor. MMD is simple in that regard.
3: I corrected a slight framerate error that threw off the sync (29.997 and 30FPS are not the same) - you can now see how closely the motion data was copied from Kozue's dance.
4: I changed the angle of the camera slightly so Alice is pointed toward it a bit more
5: most importantly: I used the MMD Cup 7 video as a guide to add blinking and facial expressions where they were visible. Where they weren't, I tried using Aikawa-san as a guide, and where that didn't work I just made it up.
I think it looks a lot better now. And Alice still goes POOF at the end.
Kudos to Junky, Ron, Aikawa, the MMD folks and the team who put together the MMD Cup entry. Now that I've dabbled in MMD I see how much hard work went into everything involved. You guys are awesome.
how did you get Alice to show up next to you like that?

@herathor1 - I saw that. It's likely due to the original video not being an exact multiple of 8 pixels across. Not sure it bothers me enough to want to upload yet a third version of this thing.
