Here I discuss the definition of horror, how it is applied as its own genre, the basic ingredient to what makes a piece of fiction work, and the very basics of horror writing.

You can check out my own writing by visiting my MySpace profile: http://www.myspace.com/jasonwhite_writer

Thanks for watching. Please feel free to leave some feedback.. Part 2 of Horror Writing Basics is in the works!

  • This is great! I can tell by your hard work in creating this video that you are very dedicated to your craft and very serious about wanting to share your knowledge with others. I've subscribed to your videos and will definately check out your Myspace site.

I'm currently unpublished, but have a half dozen short stories that I continue to hone as I learn more about writing in the horror / dark fiction genre. I plan to submit my stories once they are up to snuff.

    Thanks, again.

  • @boardskins Thank you! And good luck with your own writing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, and I will do my best to help.

  • I have a quick question. Do you only write short stories or do you write novel length fiction as well?

  • @WriterzBlog I write both, but have only published short stories.

  • You should upgrade to facebook instead of myspace, more people visit facebook.

  • while I certainly appreciate your professional insight and knowledge, it just feels very bland when you read what you are trying to say. Again, great knowledge and insight, just some spontanaity in your thoughts. Thank you

  • hey umm im hoping you could help im in the making of a horror short film about a ghost girl who whants revenge of the guy who killed her could you help me with any ideas for my script?

  • @00MORDRED A short story can be any length that is specified yet is generally between 1000 words and 5000 words. A novel is anyway above 75000 words in my own experience. I hope this helps.

  • when someone steals my cookies its horror :D

  • I write short horror stories and find that they are harder to write than a novel simply because one needs to bring a story to a satisfying conclusion within at least 4000 words-no room for a lot of back story. I do not use blood and gore, but prefer to use atmosphere, allowing the reader’s imagination to create the fear. I rewrite stories as I go and then edit five, maybe six times. I also use the ‘Flesch Reading Ease’ scores of 60 to 70 percent to keep sentences and paragraphs on track.

  • question...how many pages qualify as novel? as opposed to a short story...?
