Playing Bossa Nova Grooves With Brushes - Drum Lesson

In the video below it shows a couple tricks I like to use when playing boss nova grooves. It gives your playing a little bit of a softer feel and adds a new texture to it as well.

The first one is playing with the brush on the snare the exact same way as play the hi hat or ride cymbal part

And the second is playing with the brush pressed on the snare drum and sliding the brush back and forth producing a shaker sound. This one can be a little tricky so you'll want to PRACTICE THIS SLOWLY between the bass drum part and brush part only, so you can match them up on beats "and" of 2 to 3 and "and" of 4 to 1.

Ostinato means a musical pattern which repeats, and as the bass drum pattern is repeating here, that does make it an ostinato ;)
