Alkan: Etude in B Major Op. 35 No. 11 (Ronald Smith)

A wonderful etude in voicing melodies by Charles-Valentin Alkan, played by Ronald Smith. Contrary to the horrid accusation of Alkan lacking melodic genius, Alkan actually wrote countless wonderful and memorable melodies, and they show up yet again here. The problem is that they are within very dense chords, so the study of this etude is to voice the melodies with projecting tone amisdst all of the chords. I wish Smith recorded all twelve etudes from Op. 35, but at least he's done the last three, and also the slightly notorious No. 5, "Allegro Barbaro." Hope you enjoy!

This, I find to be the most melodically poignant in Op. 35 - the Ab major etude comes a very close second.

the return of the main theme at 4:00 is magical and the climax at 4:12 contains very special harmonies with the descending bass line. nearly makes me shed a tear. ty. wonderful post
