A bottom line indicator of the economic and environmental stresses we're facing in the world is the number of failing states. One of the best examples of this is Haiti. Once self sufficient in food, uncontrolled logging and extreme soil erosion ensured food production could not keep up with demand. Soon Haiti became the poorest nation in the western hemisphere.
Journey to Planet Earth, public television's longest-running environmental series, explores the impact of "failing states" on the fate of the environment worldwide in the documentary "Plan B: Mobilizing to Save Civilization."
