Frugal Calling

We are eliminating our recurring monthly expenses wherever possible, we started by cutting our TV service, now we rely on the HD antenna. I'll put up a video about options there soon, in the meantime I wanted to talk about frugal home phone service options.

I am not a fan of MagicJack, because it's tethered to a PC..

My solution is an Analog terminal Adapter (ATA) and a SIP provider, that way I don't need a PC connected and on all the time, and this solution is transparent to the rest of the family. I went from $44 monthly to $99 for the first year, including hardware, and $99 yearly after that.

There are plenty of other ways to get home phone service, if you even need it, like open-source PBX software, which I am familiar with, however I was trying to keep it simple, inexpensive and maintenance-free where-ever possible.

Can you elaborate on your issues using Google Voice? Everybody raves about it online and this is the first time I have heard of reliability issues. In my very brief time (minutes) using my Obi110 through Google Voice, I have yet to experience any issues.

@rwgamer : When I first started using the OBI and google voice I had a few successful calls, however it has been sporadic, sometimes I dial and get nothing, sometimes I dial and get connected for a few seconds, other times I get connected but can't hear the other person or they can't hear me. I figure you get what you pay for...

Magic Jack Plus doesn't require a pc now.

Is the current rate $8 a year for domestic calling or $8 per month? Skype is $65 a year and i don't have to drop $50 on an ATA.
