This project looks into giving high school and transfer students tastes of what schools are like from the students perspective, when put on the spot. The students were not given the question prior to the recording light commencement on the video camera. These are random students, ranging from freshmen to sophomores. They answered, I recorded, and I networked. Welcome into the eyes of a college student.
I hope to extend this project to many other schools and am relying heavily on feedback from high school students on what they want to find out from college students. I am thinking about creating a blog with the link on the YouTube site I post the videos to where high school students can post questions they want answered. There is a blooper real/ extra features real that I hope to do for each school that includes other questions about where students find themselves on their campus.
The root of the question was taken from an NPR project asking civilians of the city of Pittsburgh what their place was in Pittsburgh. This question ended up being perfect for a project like this because it leaves the interviewee left to interpret the question in their own way. Whats my place? followed by a confused face. But that could be many things. Yes. And that is exactly why its the perfect question. It throws the interviewee off and the variety of answers allows for an interesting video mash up of different student experiences.
The narrator of the project is supposed to be invisible. In this first project, I tried to remain a stranger, but am still learning how to allow for moments of discomfort while the camera is rolling. It makes for a more realistic project. So I grew more and more unresponsive as the project progressed by responding when asked what do you mean by place with an ignorant shoulder shrug. I also began to introduce the question in ways such as: take the question however you want to. This allowed the student to not be completely confused and too nervous to answer the question once asked.
So in summary: YouTube website as a resource for high school student, random students from different colleges and universities (for the project I want to do just Pitt students), 1 question, a mash-up of the different schools, each school having their own video.

Send me a message on facebook if you have any questions you want answered from college students or about any other general questions you may have!

Sincerely,

Kit Bannantine
