Am I just being picky? At the time it did startle me (as I'm sure you can tell from my reaction).

Watching the video back, there seem to be plenty of warnings, such as the slow sign/hatchings/etc, but the overtake probably wasn't as bad as I thought it was at the time.

A little bit further out would have been nicer. I can't really remember what the road was like at this point, and you can't tell from the video.

I think I just found the size of the lorry imposing.

  • the best is cyclist riding on the road and a £100,000 cycle land next to them but they dont use it,if us truck drivers went on the pavement they would be up in arms !!!!

  • @poclainerf Why fuss at cyclists for not using it...why not fuss at councils wasting £100k...which could be used to make the roads better for all of us?

  • @thomase1 but the cyclist turns and looks at you like your trying to kill them and the cycle lane is for them then when you stop at a red light they go straight through !!! i know not every cyclist does that but not every truck driver is bad we have a hard job looking out for other road users and trucks have a large blind spot on left hand side.maybe you should come out with me for a day and see for yourself i used to cycle when i was younger so iknow what it is like.

  • @poclainerf okay - so don't do things that make cyclists thing you're trying to kill them (even if there is a cycle lane elsewhere)...as you say, not every cyclist jumps red lights (just like not every motorist does - but still many do). And I am aware about blind spots on lorries and I wouldn't even think about going up the inside. However, as I know you realise - a lorry can do a lot more damage to a cyclist than a cyclist to a lorry, so as a lorry driver it always pays to be patient! :)

  • @poclainerf I should also point out that I am in no way against lorry drivers - if you actually look through my videos there are some praising particular driver's patience and safe driving. I'm not against bad lorry drivers, I'm just against bad manners on the road - that includes cyclists, drivers....etc (and I accept I'm not perfect - but do acknowledge i have flaws, which many people can't).

I can drive and have a motorbike so I'm definitely not anti-anything. :) Have a good one!

  • haha this is funny!

  • @thomase1 As for just putting up with it, why should I? I act responsibly on the road, so why should others not have to? It's really, really simple to overtake a cyclist safely and it can be very intimidating (and very scary for less experienced cyclists).

  • @thomase1

Certainly, many cyclists do seem unaware. Whenever I see a cyclist (no matter what method of transport), I take the fact that cyclists and pedestrians will not be as experienced.

As for the highway code rules...see rules:

164 (give cyclists the same space as a car/Allow plenty of room. Move back to the left as soon as you can but do not cut in)

167 (DO NOT overtake at a junction/where the road narrows)

    Both ignored

All the warning signs I mentioned are visible from the video. :)

  • @TopGearrules You were hypocritical, you were moaning about me moaning.

As for cycling proficiency. That's what I did about a decade ago and it doesn't exist. Nowadays there is Bikeability, which actually teaches good practices. Though I don't think it should be mandatory to ride a bike, I do think that every school should teach it, councils should promote subsided courses, etc.

    ....

  • @thomase1 I think your mis-understood, cycling proficiency still exists and should be a requirement for amateur cyclists. Also i am not being hypocritical, as i never said cyclists should not use the road. What i said was a worrying amount of cyclists think they are the only road users, and are un-aware of cars and other traffic.

Also, re-read the rules of Overtaking, of section 162-169. As the video is poor quality, i cannot see the road markings, but the traffic environment seemed good.
