Prospect Heights Fire Department Ambulance 9 en route to Northwest Community Hospital.

Sirens and lights, pull to the right.
If possible, pull to the right and
come to a complete stop.

2011 State of Illinois Rules of the Road on Emergency Vehicles
When approaching a stationary emergency vehicle using visual signals, Illinois law requires motorists to yield, change to a lane away from the emergency vehicle and proceed with caution. If a lane change is not possible, reduce speed and proceed with caution.

When being approached by an emergency vehicle using audible and visual signals, Illinois law requires motorists to immediately pull to the right side of the road and allow the emergency vehicle to pass. In some cases a complete stop may be necessary to allow the emergency vehicle to pass. If stopped at an intersection with two-way traffic, remain stopped until the emergency vehicle passes.

If a driver fails to yield to an emergency worker or vehicle, and that failure results in a crash where an emergency worker is injured or killed, the driver may lose his/her driving privileges for a minimum of 90 days.

  • on a road like this we are also supposed to pull over to the right; On roads with a median we can also pull to the Median. And outside the city on a road like this when the responding vehicle is in the oncoming lane and there's no traffic we don't have to pull over; otherwize we have to pull over as far as possible (also in the city): onto the grass or side-walk if necessary

  • @EnjoyFirefighting No pulling to the median in the State of Illinois.

  • @ EnjoyFirefighting Not so in Texas, either. This one gives me hives: Drivers should ALWAYS pull to the right and stop. We've had to handle too many crashes caused by idiots going to the left. State law is clear on the subject, but the same bad drivers who cruise in the left lane when the right lane is clear will pull to the left instead of going right even when there is nobody there.

  • i think the worse thing that happened to me when an emergency vehicle was passing was this teenage girl who pulled all the way to the left and nearly hit me head on as i was pulling to the right

  • nice i love phfd it is one on 1,000 of towns and fire stations i love

  • haha I c my house
