Here is Tom Geisler, a student of mine, demonstrating an exercise I gave to him with 2 focuses. The tune being used is groove 12 slow from the Tommy Igoe Groove Essentials Play Along Package. The first focus is on control. Tom has great chops and skills but for this track focuses more on the groove and complimenting the music than on proving to everyone that he has an extensive drumming "bag o tricks". All about the groove here. For the solo, his focus was to be one of not being too "chatty" while providing something interesting for the listener to feel. At the same time, he was to develop a solo around a simple spontaneous motif inspired by nothing more than the tune itself and what Tom was hearing musically at the time. Tom felt 2 successive eighth notes. It is NOT easy to embellish around such a simple motif but Tom does a commendable job here.
My only constructive critisism is that the 2 sixteenth notes on the "ah" of 4 and on "1" seem like they are a little choppy in the beginning. Not easy to play. Better then I can do atm.
Great solo. Good job all around. 5 stars.

Go Tom! I've got the funk grove down and i've been movin it around the drumset. And when all my friends say to play something cool i go straight to this beat, its so simple but when you use different surfaces it makes it sound like you actually learned a difficult groove! i was tapping along with you on my lap. good job im glad you finally got it filmed and put up!!!
