How can you help kids get a good start? In this heartfelt and personal talk, Colin Powell, the former U.S. Secretary of State, asks parents, friends and relatives to support children from before they even get to primary school, through community and a strong sense of responsibility. (Filmed at TEDxMidAtlantic.)

soldiers need structure. Kids need rhythm, love and to be allowed the space to become themselves.

muslims need structure. And I dont mean that as a disrespect at all. It is just that the religion is so totalitarian to start with, and offers clear black and white rules to run your life (where is christianity on this !??) that f you demount the old leadership, a vacuum takes over, and weird things happen.. i cant believe how the central Intelligence didnt predict half of the mess that happened, and s still to happen.. Global destabilization a concept of intend!? That would be really - sad !!!

The term "structure" can be misunderstood. Somehow we aren't respecting their need for freedom and openness. Of course they need those and every kid should have a plentiful supply. I think of structure and discipline as building a "strong container" for children. The crucible that will hold the most valuable thing in our universe, their soul. If we fail to provide this strong outer self, their inner love, compassion, and humanity will ultimately be rendered useless to themselves and our world.
