Taken from Peter Bellamy's long unavailable 1970 album of the same name, the sleeve-notes to which read:

'The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate - Straight from the Bellamy family repertoire. The words from a Randolph Caldecott picture book. 'The tune,' says Peter Bellamy, 'from me mum'. PB was fascinated with this song as a nipper and continues to be so. With justification.'

Is this the first time Peter's superlative rendition has been united with Randolph Caldecott's inspirational pictures? The entire thing can be viewed on-line at:

This wee film we dedicate to Raymond Greenoaken (for archive sourcing & general Bellamism), Mord Fiddle (for Josquin & Hunting Horn Classics) & Ian McCulloch (for bringing it to life in many's the roaring moment).

  • Oh this is great- where did you find the book? Masterfully put together must have taken a fair while to line it all up

  • One thing's for sure, the book's a lot easier to find than the record! Keep checking ebay for Randolph Caldecott.

I used the same bog standard video editing software (Showbiz?) we use for all the Sabrina Eden films; the shorter it is, the more reliable the synchronisation!

  • My neighbour had a copy of this album... He would play it almost every Sunday afternoon (why, I never understood), and the sound would carry out his window. I loved hearing it. Apparently he sold it for more than just a pretty penny awhile back because I asked him about buying it.

  • Very nice. I was actually looking for Byker Hill, by Peter, which I would list as one of my top fifteen songs/tunes/renditions of all time. However, great to hear his voice again and loved the images.

  • @killerkarl- it floats around in various versions and names, none of which I can easily find music for. However, the melody is effectively just a few bars of the Lincolnshire poacher, which is much easier to find!

  • NICE SONG BUT I HATE FOX HUNTING

  • Anybody got any idea of where to find the the music that is played here, or even a melody line? Cant pick this up by ear at all!

  • I can't see he sounds like a sheep; sometimes - as here - he's a little like Bert Lloyd. I never even realised folk music had a bad name. Chacun a son gout

  • @FENNYMAN Well, yes but it's rather jolly anyway! And who else sings this nice old thing!?

  • Thank you.

    5*****.

    Jennie.

Thanks to MorrisManDanceMan for the share also.
