Fair Trade Certification empowers farmers and farm workers to lift themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms and communities, protecting the environment, and developing the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

Ok then, please explain to me exactly what role the Marketing org plays in the value chain. It's total BS, just like RA coffee. They certify that farmers are getting open market value for coffee, which right now is about $2.34 per pound. Retailers in the US and other developed countries who sell by the cup retail coffee for in excess of $100 per pound, and these fuckers act like that is equality? The guys who run the org live well, farmers are still getting fucked.

  • RESPONSE TO COMMENT (3 DOWN)

  • We (the consumer and distributor) pay for the fair trade label not the farmer. Where are your statistics? The farmer earns a better wage and then the certifying organization takes it? is that what you are claiming? We pay a higher price for fair trade coffee and pay to use the label.

  • What the hell are you smoking? Coffee? Someone needs to certify that the farmers are indeed receiving the agreed upon price, this is a full time job for many. Even if it is a non profit the people who work for the organization can still be paid, the CEO of the red cross (A NON PROFIT), makes over 140,000 a year AND THIS IS HER ONLY JOB. Talk to a business lawyer as you are ill informed and spreading propaganda! PLEASE SHOW THE CAMERA THE LOAD ON YOUR FACE AND SWALLOW. GOOD GIRL

  • Fair trade is a bullshit marketing organization. Do the guys who own the marketing org have day jobs? How do they pay their bills? They skim off the value chain under the guise of helping people. These guys all have cars and nice houses in the first world, while the actual producers get fifteen cent per pound per year bonus. Total bs to make Americans feel like they aren't destroying the world on mindless consumption.

  • for those bringing up the US $1.50 pay for the Indian workers at the tea plantation, that 1.50 US equals about 74 Indian Rupees a day. Just saying.

  • I hope they're telling the truth.

  • do people in india have property rights? do they own the property or do they rent it from the government? if that guy only pays 1:50 is it because he has to pay large amounts of rent to the government (aka taxes?)

how far does a 1.50 go there? in american back in the early 1900 a 1.50 went a long way, until fiat money came along and debt attached to it. what can a indian buy with that and do they pay taxes on that 1.50.?

  • Well, there is FAIR TRADE and FAIR TRADE. I'd like for TRANS FAIR USA to explain WHY did they give a FAIR TRADE CERTIFICATION to the owner of a tea plantation in India who pays his workers $1.50 a day!!!. This tea plantation is in DHOKEBARI, India. They for sure know who I am talking about and let me tell you, THAT IS NOT FAIR TRADE, when all the profits go to a single person and not the farmers. Very disappointed of your organisation. M.

  • its funny how people from far away are abused to satisfy our tastebuds and then call it "fair-trade"... at least for thoose benefiting its funny.
