The stupid kayaker in this video was.....moi. I ran into this otter and his mate a bit before this clip was shot. At that time, I'd received loud and clear warning from this fellow to leave his area. So...I did. When I did though, I continued on my outting which led to the far back of this wildlife area, instead of leaving it entirely. This meant I had to pass back by where this little guy had been raising such a fuss, to get out.
I figured he'd be long gone when I paddled back through. Nope! He was still there! Not wanting to miss a good photo opportunity, I whipped the camera out one last time and satt and watched from a distance to see what he would do. Within seconds, he swam out from shore and came after me....chirping the whole time!
When I saw him coming out, I began backing even further away. It wasn't fast enough or far enough...these guys are lightning-quick. I realized that he was circling around behind me so had to toss the camera down in order to make my escape. I could see him under the water coming at me and I paddled as fast as I could backwards but... still, he was able to keep up and popped up about a foot from my kayak (not videoed...I was "running" remember!) He barked/ chirped at me once, dove...and disappeared. He told me a thing or two, that's for sure!
lol describing an otter as 'we and perfectly adorable' shows your complete lack of knowledge on otters. they are a member of that family Mustelidae which includes weasels, badgers, and wolverines... although otters may look cute, they are in fact very efficient predators and capable of inflicting serious injuries if provoked. granted it would be rare, but i don't think any of us want to tell the 'I got mauled by an otter' story.

I think I've heard some of those sounds in Winnipeg on the banks of the rivers. I never realized what it was before.

I absolutely love that you made at least some sort of an effort to respect this fellahs turf, but your account of how you panicked, threw down your camera and tried to "run" away as fast as you could from something something so wee and perfectly adorable makes sense only of you are a fresh water oyster. Crayfish maybe?
