The 2010 Chile earthquake occurred off the coast of the Maule Region of Chile on February 27, 2010, at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), rating a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale and lasting for about three minutes. The cities experiencing the strongest shaking—VIII (Destructive) on the Mercalli intensity scale—were Talcahuano, Arauco, Lota, Chiguayante, Cañete, and San Antonio. The earthquake was felt in the capital Santiago at Mercalli intensity scale VII (Very Strong).Tremors were felt in many Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza and La Rioja. Tremors were felt as far north as the city of Ica in southern Peru. Tsunami warnings were issued in 53 countries, and a tsunami was recorded, with amplitude of up to 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in) high, in the sea at Valparaíso, Chile. President Michelle Bachelet declared a "state of catastrophe". She also confirmed the deaths of at least 723 people. Many more have been reported missing.

March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Andreas Rietbrock, a professor of Earth Sciences at Liverpool University in the U.K., talks with Bloomberg's Erik Schatzker about the impact of the Chilean earthquake on the Earth's axis and length of day. The tremor, which measured 8.8 on the Richter scale and killed more than 700 people in Chile, probably shifted the Earth's axis and shortened the day, according to scientists.

I said that I've heard people making such claims but I'm not sure how legitimate they were.

I'm also sure that there are numerous Doomsday fanatics who would go as far as faking stuff like that - has anyone actually seen birds falling or were they just found scattered all over the place?

Air pollution would certainly be far more convincing argument.

I don't think that scientist is looking at it from logical point of view. I myself would think that the earthquake was cause by the shift of the axis not the other way around. And if the earth's rotation slowed down the day would lengthen not shorten, and that's worse. Look at what happens if a rotisserie chicken stops rotating, were going to burn. The axis recently shifted again, if this keeps up the polar ice caps are going to completely melt and flood the earth.

I don't know about fish but birds... I'm sure I've heard somewhere that change in Earth rotation could affect birds.

Either there's something really shitty going on or there's a bunch of 2012 doomsday fanatics playing a prank on us all.
