Among the most anticipated premieres in the mobile industry in 2009 was that of the Nokia N900 smartphone.

Lets take a closer look.

The main innovation in this model is the open source Maemo 5 (www.maemo.org) modeled on systems used in stationary computers, which among other features allows running multiple applications.

Users can browse websites like on a traditional computer with tens of windows open simultaneously on the virtual desktop. Four such personalized desktops can be run at the same time. They can be customized using widgets, contacts and shortcuts.

Web browsing is done on the Maemo Browser based on Mozilla technology. The smartphone also supports displaying advanced internet content in Adobe® Flash® Player 9.4 , AJAX (JavaScript 1.8, XML) HTML, XHTML, CSS. In other words, the majority of websites will be accessible.

Configuring an email account is very easy thats to full compatibility with Nokia Messaging services.

The Nokia N900 is also compatible with corporate solutions such as Microsoft Exchange.

A further valuable functionality is OVI Store access, where users can download the latest applications, games and multimedia.

The Nokia N9000 has a built-in 5 megapixel digital camera fitted with a Carl Zeiss lens, autofocus, and a double LED speedlight, taking quality pictures at a 2584x1938 resolution.

The video camera supports WVGA 800 x480 panoramic format that can be encoded in .mp4: MPEG4, AAC files.

The device comes with a TV output (PAL/NTSC) that can be plugged in with a Nokia video cable (CA-75U) that also comes with the N900.

The N900 Smartphone has a very sophisticated multimedia player that enables audio playback of .mp3, wma, .aac, and .wav files.

Moreover, whe can even watch a movie encoded with Divx and Xvid.

The device also has a built in FM transmitter, which is quite useful when in a car, since we can the N900 as a mobile music media center, a hands-free set or speaker system.

The phone has a built-in memory of 32 GB and supports Micro SD cards for an additional 16 GB of storage space.

The N900 is equipped with a A-GPS receiver for use with the preinstalled Ovi Maps application, which has features such as switching 3D and 2D, satellite picture map hybrid map views.

Maps can be updated for free using the Nokia Map Loader, which is available for download on Nokia websites.

The Nokia N900 weighs 181 grams, its dimensions are 110,9 x 59,8 x 18 (19,55) mm.

It has a 3.5 touchscreen with a 800x480 pixel resolution that supports displaying up to 16 million colours.

Text can be entered using a light-up full qwerty keyboard or a virtual keyboard displayed onscreen.

The Nokia N900 supports, among others, 802 11 b/g WLAN and fast internet connections for up to 10 Mb/S with HSPA connectivity.

Demanding users who need more precision will find a stylus built into the chassis.

The Nokia N900 is powered by a BL-5J battery with 1320 mAh capacity. The package also includes a USB charger.
