A great performance by Mr. Steffen, my former trumpet teacher at APSU!
It took some time to find, edit, and get this digitized, but it was worth it because I have been unable to find any other live performances by Mr. Steffen back in the day!

Me? Maybe now (2011) I could hold my own against Mr. Steffen playing Maynard Ferguson solos......but I would be lucky to be able to carry his trumpet case to a gig on anything else!
Cheers Mr. Steffen!!!!

  • You guys are nuts. I'm playing bass in this video. And I've played with half a dozen Grammy winning artists as a professional. Rick Steffen is one of the best music teachers I ever had (I was a trumpet major at APSU) and is the best trumpet player I've ever worked with. He teaches so he can be with his family instead of living on a bus. It's called priorities. The Nashville guys love it when they can get him.

  • @TrevorReddick Amen!

  • This was posted as a reply to Cat Anderson, one of the greatest trumpet screamers, exactly why? This rendition has nothing to distinguish it from any bar band/combo community jazz band anywhere in the states.

  • @sharpe427 ......It's not always about the high notes (GULP! ...hard for me to say that!), but rather, phrasing, style, musicality, gorgeous tone, finesse, confidence...etc....I am sure CAT would be proud to have Richard Steffen's rendition of this song associated with him......

  • @sharpe427 Harsh but true. The reality is that college jazz band programs can and do give the false impression that guys like this could actually make a living playing in the "real world". Weekend bar gigs at best.

  • @LeavittMusicService You couldn't be more of a brainless idiot unless you said Mr. Steffen was playing a French horn! He played lead and directed the 1'o clock at UNT and is a first call trumpet player for session and live gigs in the Nashville area.....c'mon APSU alumni...back me up here!!!

  • Rick Steffen has to be the most modest trumpet player ever. He played for Tony Plog once, and Tony was so impressed he questioned him as to why he was teaching, that he PLAYED too well to be teaching. Ask Vince DiMartino about him, when Rick had to be called to play LEAD on Five Episodes for Trumpet and Brass Choir. If someone thinks this cat can't play, they don't know jack about music, and more specifically, the trumpet.

  • Thanks for posting. Gave up full-time touring to teach. In addition to teaching, he's one of the "on call" guys when they need a trumpet on a record in Nashville. Great player, great teacher, great person.

  • @yourbrassinstructor Wow you didn't say that he was a college lead trumpet player. He must be making hundreds of dollars a year as a player. Ask your idol these two questions. What full time music job auditions (not teaching) has he won and how much money does he make each year as a jazz player? To be honest I would bet he has never won a single pro-player audition and I would bet as a jazz musician he makes less a year than a garbage man. The numbers don't lie.

  • I am a recent graduate music major from APSU, and had the good fortune to listen to Mr.Steffen numerous times. Thanks for posting this!!!
