  • The ability to specialize and exchange in goods and services and ideas, allows a society to produce more of those things per capita. Generally, when populations fall and the numbers of pirates and bandits and bad roads and high tariffs and warfare and blockades increase, the average person's standard of living tends to fall. The period after the Black Death only saw an increase in standard of living because trade increased, despite huge population loss, that was very much atypical in history.
