Prior to the expulsion of the Hashemites from Arabia by the House of Saud, the Hashemites were the custodians of Mecca and Medina. Emir Faisal, of the Hashemite ruling family, signed the Faisal-Weizman agreement with Chaim Weizman, for which the Arabs agreed to the establishment of a Jewish state. However, after the Hashemite expulsion, 77% of the agreed Jewish homeland was taken and given to the Hashemites by the British; this is now known as Jordan. The Arabs then renegged on the agreement.
