From The Who's 1974 compilation collection 'Odds and Sods'....an outtake from the aborted 'LIFEHOUSE' project..this is 'Put The Money Down'...a Roger Daltrey vocal tour de force !!...A quote from John Entwistle puts it into perspective: "'Put The Money Down' only had a guide vocal, and that held up the release of the record, but I just couldn't get Daltrey down to the studios to record a new vocal. So I sent him a message asking if it'd be all right if I did the vocal, and almost immediately Daltrey replied that it was O.K. as long as he could overdub the bass parts!!lol! Next morning he was in the studio!"..lol!
So this is my attempt at this wicked tune..all synth, bass and drums sounds done by yours truly(listen in stereo for an extra special treat in the headhones)all using a keyboard and some drum loops....it is considerably different than the original..plus I screwed up some lyrics...also,..there's a line about 'bands killing chickens'?....hmmmm...I'm guessing The Alice Cooper Band was in town ? lol !...oh..can anyone solve the case of the disappearing blue guitar strap ?
Put the Money Down - The Who
Words & Music by Pete Townshend
I got lost in the back streets, trying to get here tonight,
The police were asking questions, they took me to the wrong place twice!
I even lost my passport, and I forgot my name and town,
But now I'm here by the water, put the money down.
Before I walk on the water,
Put the money down, down, down,
There are bands killing chickens,
My hero's getting pushed around, 'round, 'round.
I don't know if I trust you, as you try to shoot me down,
He's gonna walk on the water,
Put the money down, down, down,
Put the money down !
T'was a beautiful day in Columbus when the fences fell..
But the five loaves and the fishes ain't gonna be much help,
I got a hungry juggler here who wants to keep ahead,
Before he walks the water, he wants his bread!
Take a glass of a light brown ale and a purple pill,
If the ale don't getcha to, sure as hell the pill will !,
Oh, mommy, mommy, please may I go downtown?
He's gonna walk on the water,
Put the money down...oooooo yeah..
Put it down,
before I walk on the water,
Put the money down, down, down.
There are bands killing chickens,
My hero's gettin' pushed around, round, round
I don't know if you trust me, as I try to shoot you down,
I'm gonna walk on the water,
Put the money down, down, down, down, down,
Put the money doooooooowwwwwwwn......
In a tin cup.
