Oh, and as far as off-leash work goes, the Shiba wants a 'Leader'. As soon as I figured out I was too slow to be their 'Leader' I started bicycling with them, or jogging when they got a little older. Now we walk. They are 14. They are very head strong, and they seem to want to have a purpose for their adventures, and the toughest part is commanding them to follow your boring straight line down the side of the road on the pavement. Takes years of training.

@Dishiest Yes. He is a Shiba Inu. I have owned both of them (litter mates) for 14 1/2 years and got them from the breeder in Oakland NJ. There were three in the litter, and one went off to win awards. My two have never been shown; but Haiku, who is black & tan and stars in his video, has received a great deal of attention due to his coat color.

Oddly, the perfect day to bathe them, and set them outside on the deck to dry, is when it is around 50 or 55 degrees, and not windy, but sunny. If you towel dry them, and let them outside - wet - on a 50 degree day - they are as happy as pigs in mud. I don't know the dynamics of it, but it's almost like they incubate themselves dry.

And, I don't know about the germs issue - i guess the soap you use would get rid of germs. I bought a shampoo (for people) that is dye free/ perfume free and I condition with a dye free/ perfume free conditioner which helps blow their coat out. Use it sparingly because it's tough to rinse out of their coats. And, I don't know why they like cold water better, but I suspect its because their coats are so thick, and the water warms from their body heat.

For the Shiba, it's all about trust. And, they aren't like Labs who both love the water and will trust you no matter what. The Shiba doesn't really like water, and will learn not to trust you. Stable footing for them in important - so the bottom of a tub might not be working for him. Take your time; break the process into parts and teach him one part at a time. Don't rush into the entire bath in one day. And, they are sensitive to perfumes & dyes.

Both are definitely Shibas. Very cute! I started off showering with mine, so they got the idea that the purpose of a shower is to get clean. I use colder water and also dye/fragrance free products.

i just gave my shiba puppy a bath i had to hold him and do it by a wash cloth, cause when i put him in the tub in the backyard he yelped & ran and rolled all over the ground & got dirty, so i held him & did it by a wash cloth while he cried , i felt so bad for him awe then i pet him wrapped him in a big towel put a warm water bottle wrapped in a shirt next to him in his favorite stuffed animal and wrapped him in a blanket and now hes sleeping,

any advice for me or a way to approach it better?
