The Sendai Earthquake and tsunami on March 11th, then followed by nuclear leaks at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, have resulted in massive international media attention, which has focused its coverage on the very limited nuclear threat and diverted needed attention away from the over 250,000 displaced evacuees in the Tohoku region. This is my appeal to the mass media to adjust its focus back on the immediate dangers facing the survival of so many of our neighbors hundreds of miles north of Tokyo.

  • Well, 3 months later it turns out all the cores did meltdown. The foreign media has not stopped the aid from going north the government has down a wonderful job of making a total mess out of that. The victims are being cut off assistance because the TEPCO payments are being counted as "income" and 28,000 temporary houses sit empty as tsunami survivors realize if they leave the shelter, they will have no food. I live in Japan and I have volunteered up there since. Stop living in Denial..

  • @ChrisNolandTV And you would have people fleeing the metropolis? I have never taken the issue lightly in regards to the people of Fukushima, for whom this problem is next door. But the media would have you believe that Fukushima and Tokyo were one, facing the same threat. Using words like meltdown is moot without statistical context. I applaud your volunteer work and I am heading up to Iwaki next weekend myself. Exaggerated media coverage has scared most people from volunteering in Fukushima...

  • I just want to take a moment to thank you all for your comments. I have gotten a lot of strength back from all of you. This is a dynamic issue that has long term repercussions for Tohoku and all of Japan and I hope that I can do my part to put local news and culture in context. Next challenge is how the int'l media approaches the exposure of radiation to local agriculture. The future of the local economy lies in the balance, so let's judge based on numbers and hard research, not hysteria.

  • For people who dont agree with this video, lets not say if he gets his facts right or not, he made one single point that is very important about media in general: The media should be objective, no matter what happens. It is not suppose to use subjective and vague descriptions such as catastrophy and chernobyl. But sadly, dramatizing events is nothing new to the media.

He did not say that the nuclear threat is not important, hes saying that tens of thousands of people need immediate attention.

  • He tells it how it is, with the facts instead of blowing it way out of proportion like foreign media do. No Japanese media is in anyway downplaying the seriousness at Fukushima, Fluency in Japanese would prevent you from suggesting they are doing the opposite, Fuji Ch8 plays it up 24/7. Threat? Shinjuku had 0.0530 microsieverts tonight, a threat? Piss poor in comparison to the radiation exposure you get for travelling in an airplane. Genkiest keep it real please! Get a 和英辞書!

  • 1. No Meltdowns? (Meltdowns DID happen -- in 3 reactors!)

    2. Radiation is NOT minimal in Tokyo, we know that ALL Tokyo residents all NOW have 100's of particles ingested PERMANENTLY in their bodies. (As does Mr Castallano.)

    3. The Japanese were NOT careful -- they were in fact NEGLIGENT in radiation checking and in informing the citizens. And the crime of secrecy continues.

    5. Get a job with NHK!!

    6. It's now 168 Hiroshimas and counting.

    7. Cesium laced fish now headed for Africa.

  • Chernobyl murdered about 1,000,000 people, probably a lot more since so many cancer deaths are just denied.

The GE Plant in Japan is much worse.

  • Now the lying Japanese Government has admitted that their nuclear power plant, which was designed to fail, has emitted 30 times the radiation of Hiroshima, and it is still uncontained.

  • Is this guy for real?

  • By the way, if you don't want to see wrong infos about fukushima. then stop lying and hiding the real facts about the disastrous situation!

  • We shouldn't focus on minimizing the situation, to help the nuclear industry to be going on, but on the contrary, we should focus on the denuclarisation of the planet. That's an emergency!

So paranoïa, hystery and so on, you can keep it for yourself!

THE SITUATION IS VERY SEVERE, AND INSTEAD OF LEARNING FROM IT, THE NUCLEAR INDUSTRY AND THEIR SUPPORTERS TRY TO MINIMIZE THE DESASTER AND CONTINUES TO LIE!

    That's enough!

  • Well all this nucleotides are spreading around the north hemisphere, but noone should say anything because it could create a panic? Are you really trying to ... us? The consequences are still not valuable. It's the first time 3 cores metldowns happen. And we only have theories about what will really happen. Personnally I'm not optimist at all. And what about the food contaminated, the seafood?

  • @Ilpadrinodaniel are the Japanese supposed to wait until they get cancer and wait until their Children are dead to Panic? all 3 reactors are going through China Syndrome and melting down into the water table, and that isn't something to panic about? are we supposed to wait until we're dead? when is the right time to panic? when the Government says so? can we even trust the Government or the nuclear industry anymore? >.<

  • @Ilpadrinodaniel I didnt mention anyone fleeing anything, so thats your own ... The problem is next door, where do you think our foods come from? The cores melted down, why cant that word be used? People do not want to live in Fukushima because of the government cover up over the radiation. Anyone would be a total fool to believe them, not even the japanese believe the little information they are giving out. So everyone is supposed to wait and get cancer?
