I live in Assen and have a job in Groningen. My round trip commute distance is about 63 km ( 39 miles ). I arrive at work at 8 am and leave at 5 pm. These are some of the other commuters on the journey.
On the day that I made the video I faced a headwind in both directions (!) and my average speed was 28.6 km/h so it took a little over an hour each way. It was 3 C ( 37 F ) this morning. A good temperature for cycling, and at least it wasn't raining like last week.
Another view of the commute on another day is also on the blog: http://hembrow.blogspot.com/2009/02/commuting.html
Groningen has the highest cycling rate in the world with 57% of all journeys by bicycle. Assen also has a very high cycling rate. There are more details on my blog: http://hembrow.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-groningen-grew-to-be-worlds-number.html
Also there is a view of the Assen rush hour:

The bike that I am riding is a Pashley PDQ recumbent: http://hembrow.eu/personal/pashleypdq.html
The music is Toot, Toot, Tootsie! (Goo-Bye!) recorded by The Benson Orchestra of Chicago (under the direction of Roy Bargy) in 1922. It is freely downloadable from:

David, I meant this comment regarding What MewFushisDad said, I know the Netherlands is bicycle oriented. In many places in America bicycles are still a bit scarce.
Even outside of the local University bicycling is big here, and still growing at a good pace especially with the economy being down as it is...

I'm glad to hear that cycling is growing. Of course, the challenge is to do this without people being forced to cycle for economic reasons. What has been done here is to make cycling an extremely attractive form of transport for everyone.
BTW, if you want a basket, get in touch. I make them.

Very cool video! David I like that recumbent you ride with the baskets. I have used it for inspiration on my next one..
Where I live in S.Cal I will see hundreds of riders on some days..so it matters where you live, if I ride through the local university when classes get out, I may see a few hundred student/cyclists in a few minutes..
very green....

There is a bit of a difference. 60% of all journeys In Groningen are by bike. As a result, you see lots of bikes everywhere all the time, not just near the university when the classes come out.
