WaterFire - Kansas City 2009 - Lighting

The ceremony of lighting the fires at the art installation, WaterFire is both simple and compelling. People involved with the event, local dignitaries and just plain old folks are chosen to carry the torches to the water, where boats of volunteers come to meet them with their own torches. Once the flame has been passed, the boaters light the braziers filled with aromatic wood.

One by one as evening approaches the small embers turn into pyres that run along the waterway. It's nothing complicated, but watching the fire start and grow and finally engulf the wood is pretty special.

With giant speakers running down the bank, playing a vast array of recorded music and acting as monitors for the live performances interspersed throughout the fire dancers, the Quixotic dance fusion and tango dancers (this year was a lot of tango), everything joins together into a nice, mellow celebration of life.

We didn't even know what was going on, we were driving along ward parkway heading to the plaza because we were bored and figured at least the plaza is a pretty place to go walking around. Then as we were driving by the plaza we saw this going on and decided to check it out and we had a wonderful time!!!

It ended up being one of the most fun things my boyfriend and I have done together, especially a huge improvement of our night since we were bored before we came across this waterfired :)
