Cherokee Song There are many translations of this song. This is just one of many. This is because a direct word-for-word translation won't fit the tune. I hope you like it.
I like this one.

The song is sung in English by many folks but I think I heard it by the Gaithers. I don't know who wrote the original song.
This is in the Giduwa (Keetoowah) Dialect as spoken on the Qualla Boundary (note: the Qualla is NOT a reservation. It is rather lands held in trust) and you will hear the intrusive "h" sound as well as notice sometimes syllables are dropped. More would be dropped if this was spoken rather than sung.
Songs are a good way to learn a language. You will see and hear it here 4x. It will first be in phonetics and then in syllabary. (Scientist tell us seeing and hearing and repetition help us to learn but if you add doodling while you listen they claim you will remember even more!)
The translation here is basically:
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, HIs name is beautiful He is a beautiful Savior Something is beautiful about the Messiah (Anointed one)
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus Let EVERYONE proclaim
Kings (Presidents or chiefs) die but Jesus is Eternal.
Enjoy! (Haliheliga!)

Someone asked-- who taught me
well the good stuff-- the stuff I do /say right -- all the credit goes to many folks-- the blame, for me not remembering or speaking as well as I ought lies squarely with me...
but the credit i give to those who have loved me and worked with me and basically put up with me for all these years!
So EQUA sgi to the following folks:
Edohi aka Walker Calhoun who spoke with me and challenged me for more than 6 years and kept making me say it "Shgwo" (Again)
and to James "Bo" Taylor who never lets up but keeps challenging me to try harder...
To Shirley Oswalt and to Nula who were and are patient with me
to Francis Hartwell over at WCU who taught and teaches the Cherokee language where I am glad to say I was enrolled as a student, and, To Tom Belt from OK but also teaching over at WCU, and to my brother Jeremy who learns from several folks and teaches me and challenges me to learn more
and of course, my first words in the language including my name were taught to me by my dad, who was a speaker and who learned from his mom, Agnes, who I'm told, held me and rocked me, speaking and singing to me when I was very young.
NOTE: We post these FREE no charge because our goal is to PRESERVE this beautiful language. Help spread the language! Learn it! Speak it! Use it! Everyday!
