Chaos results when experimental plants escape and start attacking people! - The Triffids are coming! The Triffids are killing! A shower of meteorites produces a glow that blinds anyone that looks at it. As it was such a beautiful sight, most people were watching, and as a consequence, 99% of the population go blind. This chaos results in the escape of some Triffids: experimental plants that are capable of moving themselves around and attacking people.

@MyRottweilers i neglected to mention also that this pal version was originally taken from a laserdisc hence the better print quality. a scene featuring a triffid attacking the airline passsengers after the pilot announces that the plane will be landing was also cut prior to being released in the US.A restored ‘scope print was screened at theTCMFilm Festival in 2010,hopefully its mere existence will ensure a proper DVD release, with archival extras that address the film’s troubled production.

freddie francis was a former cinematographer who also directed the following films for Amicus which were anthologies such as Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965), Torture Garden (1968) and Tales from the Crypt as well as films for Hammer throughout the 1960s and 1970s. These films included thrillers like Nightmare (1964) and Hysteria (1965), as well as more traditional monster films such as The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) and 1968 s Dracula Has Risen from the Grave

@MyRottweilers yes this is the pal version, also in addition to this Director Steve Sekely's original cut was adjudged so disastrous that an uncredited Freddie Francis was brought in to shoot a whole new subplot, featuring Keiron Moore and Janette Scott in a vine-besieged lighthouse, to thread through the old footage. The results are less satisfying than the later BBC serial adaptation, but it still has some irresistible end-of-the-world and killer-plant material.

Thanks for the update, comicbookal, and I did enjoy seeing Day of the Triffids once again. While my memory of the original is a few decades old I think there were a few scenes missing from your YouTube post that I saw in the theater. Was this the PAL version from Europe?
A lot of the old sci-fi films and other classics have been remade and most of them have been at least as good as the originals.

The recent (2009) 2 part BBC updated version is not too bad with Dougray Scott as Bill Mason but I would still have to agree with MyRottweilers in mentioning that the Dvd version released here in the U.S. of the '62 version is really bad and definitely needs to have a proper remastering done again with corrected color and audio enhancements! A GREAT film that really needs to be presented in the BEST possible manner.

Additional info in relation to previous:Included in the acquisition package is the the original scifi novel by John Wyndham, which was the basis for the 1962 film. There were earlier reports that this film would be done in 3D but that remains to be seen at the moment. One of the cool things about the film is that Michael Preger was involved in the adaptation of another novel by Wyndham, Village of the Damned which was made into a film by John Carpenter.

@MyRottweilers Some info for you that I think you will enjoy as follows:Mandate Pictures has won an expensive bidding war for the rights to The Day of the Triffids. Ghost House productions is in the partnership between Sam Raimi (Director of the Spider-Man films), Rob Tapert and Mandate Pictures. Raimi has wanted to direct this picture for a long time since the original film was one of his favorites as a child.

Day of the Triffids was one of the best sci-fi films but somehow someone managed to really mess up the DVD for the American distribution. What is being sold in Region 1 looks like a bad copy of a VHS movie taped off of a tv broadcast. In searching for a good copy to view I found that the PAL version of the movie sold in Europe is the only thing available but unfortunately it won't play in the USA. I look forward to enjoying this movie here on YouTube and thank the people who put it here.

Ditto in re "The Kraken Wakes" (a.k.a. "Out of the Deeps." As anthonyzxy says, what a great movie it'd make.
