In New York City, there are more than 10,000 street vendors, many who are recent immigrants. Subject to the elements, long work hours and ever-tightening city regulations, the life of a street vendor is not an easy one. Although they may be on almost every street corner, they are not just nameless faces; their stories need to be heard. Portraits: Immigrant Street Vendors humanizes these tireless vendors and gives them a voice.

What I don't understand is why don't cities like NYC rent out spots to vendors? Then the vendors would be there legally and the city would make money off them and thus leave them alone.
