"Strategus sp." Ox Beetle in Tucson

Going to the park at 1pm in a Tucson summer is generally seen as "not a good idea." It's bearable for your kids if you drench their t-shirts in water. Of course, it *is* guaranteed that the park will be all yours! Also you might get to see some cool critter behavior. Today we saw the great-tailed grackles digging purposefully and extensively in the playground wood chips. One finally pulled something out and I scared it off to capture the prize for myself. What a beauty! Micah adores beetles, so we scooped up a good deal of damp, decomposing wood chips for him to live in and brought him home.
