September 10, 2008 - The ATLAS detector lit up as a flood of particles traversed the detector when the beam was occasionally directed at a target near ATLAS. This allowed ATLAS physicists to study how well the various components of the detector were functioning in preparation for the forthcoming collisions.

The first ATLAS data recorded on September 10, 2008 is seen here.

  • so when is the real test?

  • Early Spring 2009 -- Startup of LHC and later first event collisions (colliding a beam with a given energy with the counter-rotating beam of the same energy). Previous world record is 2 TeV. This will lead to several months of intensive data taking before next winter shutdown. First papers with early results may come in late summer 2009.

  • I must say; considering the global efforts incorporated into this program my confidence in humanity is amplified.

  • It hasn't started yet, this is more a less a test. Give it a year or two to start generating real data and for it to be studied before you hear about any real breakthroughs.

  • @MattBCX

ok explain which theory of physics is correct which it wont kill us?

    no one knows

  • how can an outsider get information about the results?

  • even if it DOES kill us all in a black hole it would b kinda cool wouldn't it?

  • wow, really getting annoying how people think this whole thing is terrible and its going to kill us all when no one except for the people running the machine knows how it works....

  • never.

  • Will the real experiment kill us all with a black hole?
