Here is the Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill addressing Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the President of Ireland, speaking on the theme 'What it means to be Irish'. This was a lecture conducted in December '08 on the Irish identity to an audience made up largely of young college students as well as President Mary McAleese.

The Villa manager discusses amongst other things growing up in a nationalist family, his experiences playing for Northern Ireland and his overall thoughts on his Irish identity.

In this fifth and final part, Martin O'Neill talks about improved relations between the Irish and English, whether or not he thinks Irishness will become diluted by increased globalisation and his thoughts on the future of Irishness.

Hope you enjoy it along with the other parts.

  • @ojohn87 Why would anyone ask him about that....it's been done to death. An unfortunate episode but I don't think there's much to add to it.

  • I'm Irish born and rared, everytime I come across this man I want to listen to him.

  • Would his hair be dyed?

    Much like Ronald Reagan, mmm.

    cheers.

  • Thanks for the upload. Very enjoyable to hear the thoughts of Martin; a well educated and well spoken man. However, I do wonder why nobody asked him what he thought about Neil Lennon getting death threats from loyalists and having to retire from playing for N.Ireland at the time he played for Celtic?
