Great documentary!!
I also think that Planned Obsolescence will SLOW our growth rather than expand it simply because the aim of Planned Obs- is to create upgrades with small improvements and short life spans so that you always buy the next product, which is always a small improvement.
We will never be able to create a FINAL product which will never need to be upgraded but If the aim was to create something with it's maximum capability at the present time upgrades would come only when necessary

@MarkShaneHansen My theory was based on if everything was currently "changed".
If it were already "changed", life would be utterly different in all ways and our current conversation would not even hold matter in that universe.
-
@MarkShaneHansen My response to you saying that there isn't enough to do:
There just aren't enough people "doing"! It's not a lack of things to do, there is a lack of competence including wealthy business owners and poor individuals.
Money can be made in infinite ways. How ever you want to make it, is up to the individual. To say you have a hard time finding a job because of the crisis can be true but can also mean that you are effect, not cause over your environment & life.

@NicoVictoryCollu "There is always somethign to do!" is a myth as well, then. Spain's national unemplayment rate is 23,5%, it''s youth is 50%. US: 8.3% EU avg: 9.3% GR: 20.9% ES: 23.5% UK: 8.7%
And this is just the western world. During my short research, I saw a few countries going over 50%. "Always something to do".. There's not enough jobs and money to keep the whole world living in luxury.
-
@NicoVictoryCollu So if everything's lifespan doubled, what should people do exactly?
We would need a completely new monetary system. I'm not saying I think that it's a bad idea, since I don't have much faith in our current system. But it would be major changes and with the political system we have today and lobbyists, there's no way it'd go through. At least not anytime soon.
See next comment, as I'm running out of remaining characters.

@MarkShaneHansen Yeah, I understand what you mean. I think it's very hard to predict how prices would react because IF it were like this everything would be different.
We'd basically be living a new world and currency wouldn't be seen in the same way as now. I think the situation would be very different all around and it would depend on the individual in what they find to be a smart move.
Jobs going obsolete. This is a myth, I'm sorry! ^^ . There is always something to do!
-
@NicoVictoryCollu If the stuff lasts longer, the prices will go up, not down. If you double the lifetime of a printer, the printer store will need to charge the double in order to keep business going. It's quite obvious (no offense). And with everything lasting longer, a lot of jobs would be obsolete.
Would the best of the best create more ideas? Possibly, but it may not be worth the money and few if any would be willing to invest in it knowing they won't get their money back.
-
@MarkShaneHansen Yes, that I have to agree with!
But living standards will increase as well and in the long-run, I actually think prices will be cheaper simply because your stuff LASTS!! :D
Instead of buying 3 printers in a timespan of 10 years, you can buy 1 that just works. Of course, there will be built better printers but yours WILL work.
But then there will be another talk about staying "Up-to-date" instead of "Planned Obsolescence"... A lot of topics to cover!!
-
@NicoVictoryCollu Best will not always conquer, but let's ignore that and move on to what you're trying to say. Medium efficiency minimum price will always be lower than maximum efficiency minimum price, therefor going full out will not reduce the price to that of the average today, as the materials and technology used will still have a price they need to pay for.
-
@MarkShaneHansen I have to disagree!
Creating something with the intention of maximum capability will (not always!) mean that inventors try to create products with lighter material, better efficiency, faster bla bla, bla bla.
Sometimes an inventor might go all out and create something that will cost a fortune due to his freedom to use the best of the best in the market but competition will immediately battle him with price and the cheapest & BEST will always conquer! I think it's a win for all
-
@MarkShaneHansen I wasn't able to explain much since I only had 500 characters so my comment was a little vague, lol!
With "Our" I mean humanity. If everything was based on creating the best of the best, it would expand ideas and give inventors more power to create things we've not even dreamt of yet. But with Pl. Ob. we are limited to creating & distributing products on a schedule based on money/profit which I think slows down creativity tremendously!!
Tak for at lægge videoen op. Jeg hørte om den, efter den var blevet sendt.
Kender I til det at tøjet ikke holder? I gamle dage da holdt stoffet da længere og til hårdt arbejde, nu slides det op på få måneder bare ved at jeg går i det?

@Slinky2DK Var så lidt :-)
