This was the first time the Indianapolis "500" was broadcast live on American television.
For fifteen years, even while it was showing an edited tape of the race that evening, ABC had pleaded with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to carry the race live. In 1986, they finally got their wish.
In the post race interview Kevin said he turned down the boost earlier in the race & "didn't dare turn it back up" because he lost his earpiece. If he popped it off he woulda lost tons of horsepower. Since the yellow allowed Rahal to save fuel - Rahal went boost up for the pass. Kevin said himself "I was a sitting duck." At lease he didn't do anything snakey like jump on the brakes like Emmo did one time, I commend him for that.
That wouldn't be a legal pass by today's standards. Rahal was fully ahead crossing the line at the restart. Today's rules I believe state the leader MUST cross the line first at the restart.
Yes, Sam Posey tried to talk to Cogan during the yellow...live interview over the radio. Cogan snubbed him. Back then USAC didn't give a "one to go" signal when going back to green, so Posey would have ruined his restart. In the end, Cogan ruined the restart himself anyway.
I would like to see more 80's Indy finals !

IIRC, Rahal ran the fastest race lap in 500 history (up to that time) on lap 200.

Thats in NASCAR. In IndyCar then and now once the the green is waved on a restart you can overtake again.

As disappointing as that as for Cogan, it's better to experience that than to keep getting hounded about the start of the 1982 race.
