The best thing about Gore not getting the presidency in 2000 is that Lieberman was denied the vice presidency.

there are geopolitical reasons as well. Having a close ally (that we practically own, in a sense) where three continents meet, where the suez canal is, where the holy lands are, and near most of the worlds oil, has been considered strategically important for decades.
