Talk about epic sounds !!!

Sunn0))))) released their seventh studio album (13th-ish release) on Southern Lord records in 2009.

Sunn really did an excellent job crafting this CD. They found a hundreds of new ways to expand on what seemed like a very basic and beaten to death sound.

there's still plenty of trademark Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson's power drone sound, but they've added tons of other instrumentation on here. Let's see if I can list all the the shit they used .. electric guitar, bass, stand up bass, oscillators, clarinets, english horns, piano's, violins, conch shells, hydrophones, french horn, korg MS20, violas, tubular bells, wood creakiness, soprano vocals, trumpets, trombones, organs, a full choir, moogs, percussions, alto flutes and probably much more.

Very epic and evil sounding. very enjoyable to listen to. i actually felt my consciousness expand a little while listening to this.

What you get, basically, is your typical SunnO))) sound with Attila's familiar devil chants, but with a very rich sounding instrumentation adding many levels of ambiance and atmosphere to the album. Dylan Carlson and oren Ambarchis also pop up quite often on here.

Crazy good stuff for drone addicts and artsy metal heads alike. Sunn continues to blow me away.

4.7/5

  • I'm pretty shure that it was Greg Anderson that own's Southern Lord Records.

M&D to me is their most incredible album. But their best for me is their collaboration with Boris in the album Altar and the early album, Flight Of The Behemoth. Their Domkirke live LP is another incredible album. Attila for me is a better vocalist for Sunn O))) than in Mayhem.

    "Maximum volume yields maximum results"

  • I looked it up and Greg and Steve both founded it in 1998.

  • yeah, i don't know. i'm on the fence with this band. i can't find anything wrong with them, but i also can't really find anything exciting about them.

  • I was on the fence with Sunn for years, until, one day, I was stuck in traffic on a highway that was under repair during rush hour, in winter.

Something about being trapped in a vehicle yet surrounded by people, stoned, made me really relate to the oppressive sound.

Been a huge fan ever since. I was listening to White 2.

Definitely a band I'm surprised has other fans.

  • I dont understand SunnO))) tbh. What's so appealing about it ?

  • It's for dudes who are into experimental sub genre music. Sunn takes making a riff to the utmost extreme and never shy from making music as evil as possible.

  • i wouldnt say this album is that dark...i mean..alice is one of the most beautiful things ive ever heard.

  • @YoureWrongImRight Actually I had a similar experience with Bohren & der Club of Gore's Black Earth. Stuck in traffic, I put it on. I already liked the album, but instead of enjoying it even more I absolutely hated it, I started to feel pretty sick quite quickly. It's still the only music I like but can't stand in the car. Pretty weird.

  • IDK if anyone else had this problem, but my album came in this really tight sleeve that i could not remove without ruining, it was pretty much impossible though. did anyone else have this problem

  • And if you think Attila is the only vocalist they've had, you're even a bigger moron than I thought. Do us all a favor. Go review Nickelback and leave all of the Anderson and O'Malley related reviews to those of us who know what the fuck were talking about. The least you could do is find out how to pronounce Csihar's name before you horribly fuck up the pronounciation. Total moron.

  • Do some basic level fact searching dumbass. Greg owns SouthernLord. And the only people who call the band "Sunnoh" are idiots who don't have a fucking clue about where the name comes from. Do spew your pretentious drivel without having the facts. Complete moron.

  • Nice review. I don't like any of the previous albums by Sunn, but I think this one is pretty damn amazing. I'm gonna see them live in January :-)

  • In interviews I've read/heard Greg says that he is the owner of the label and is the only one that deals with the business side of it. According to him, O'Malley is really just a graphic design guy these days. I'm not sure how it was when they were founded, but that is how it stands now.

  • Lol, "its not an O"

Bought this a few weeks ago at Fred Meyers(?) I was really surprised that they had it.

  • Hum... I think it's pronouced Chihar. Don't know.
