Virtual Basic Laparoscopic Skill Trainer (VBLaST) is the virtual version of the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) skill training toolbox that is being developed at the interactive Medical Simulation Laboratory (iMedSim) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The VBLaST has custom made interface with instrumented tools connected to two PHANToM Omni's for force feedback. Currently the VBLaST consists of four tasks namely: Peg Transfer, Pattern Cutting, Ligation Loop and Introcorporeal Suture.
Preliminary validation studies conducted in collaboration with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA showed that VBLaST was able to differentiate between novice and expert groups.
This project is funded by NIH/NIBIB R01EB9362.
The Principal investigator of this project is Dr. Suvranu De, Associate Professor, MANE, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY
